ABOUT THE PRINT
This print is part of the series Migration, where JC Candanedo combines photography and dance to spark conversations around displacement and restriction of movement. The work highlights the difficulties faced by anyone who finds themselves in a situation where they are forced out of their countries, only to find borders closed in front of them as they try to seek refuge in a new land.
The work was created in collaboration with dancer Max Gershon at a disused warehouse in South London that was soon to be demolished. Gershon explored the space with his body, moving around the building and sensing its vulnerability while Candanedo photographed him. The warehouse laid bare in front of them, defenceless, open and threatened, making them reflect on the fact that once communities are eroded the only testimony that remains are the memories we carry.
JC Candanedo is a Queer, Catalan-Panamanian socially-engaged Multidisciplinary Artist and Photographer based in the UK. He uses photographic processes to work with people and communities to investigate issues of Identity and Migration, inviting the viewer to reflect on where they both intersect. He’s passionate about using the visual arts to encourage Social Transformation.
