NEW BEGINNINGS
My name is JC Candanedo and I am a London-based Visual Artist. This is my fashion photography story called New Beginnings which I shot in 2015 for the Future Issue of Meade Magazine. I wanted to explore how the effects of the 2008 recession were still being felt so many years later and the lack of opportunities had left young people overwhelmed about their future.
It is often said that every day is a new beginning and the future is for us to make. But when the path to follow is so ambiguous, how can we expect young people to be ready for the challenge? I tried to convey this by shooting the models standing in clean spaces, looking almost lost and off into the distance - avoiding eye contact with the camera.
I think this editorial is particularly relevant today during the times we are living because a whole generation of students has been affected by the effects that the pandemic has had on the economy and on their future.
The styling is by Geraint Donovan-Bowen and he used all white, with lots of slick clothes, lots of sheer but all very structured. The brands are high end brands like Alexander McQueen, Maison Martin Margiella, Alexander Wang and Kenzo.
The work was selected as a finalist for the 2015 AOP Photography Awards and were exhibited at the Old Truman Brewery.
This series was created in collaboration with stylist Geraint Donovan-Bowen, Makeup Artist Christiana Amankrah, Hair Stylist Rachel Williamson and models Sinclair and Jaimie Walshe from Space Model Management.
The work was featured on:
Meade Magazine the Future Fashion issue.
