COLONIAL ENTANGLEMENTS

My name is JC Candanedo, UK-based Queer Multidisciplinary Artist. In my series Colonial Entanglements, I wrap everyday objects (a chair, a globe, a book) using my phototextile artefacts and sisal rope to interrogate the enduring, often invisible, legacy of the European colonial project on our modern world. The objects are rendered immobile, bound by the physical weight of history through a process of wrapping and restrictive knotting.

Following the footsteps of Man Ray, and Christo and Jean Claude, these sculptures create a visual tension between the objects we use and the systems that provide them. This work serves as a reminder that innovation in the Global North is inextricably tied to the historical and ongoing exploitation and extraction of resources from the Global South.
